The Book Thief’s story starts, when Liesel
Meminger, our main protagonist, decides to escape reality by writing. Writing helpd her conquer all the challenges
that came along in life, especially when she least expected them. Yet, she
bravely carried on and tried to envision a happier life. Despite her losses she had managed to stand
back up and gain experience, confidence and
unforgettable friends.
Death vividly
narrates The Book Thief‘s story with tenderness, and empathy. At the age of 11,
the Book Thieve’s Communist mother is forced to seperate with Liesel, leaving
her alone in a chaotic world with no one but her foster parents to watch over her. As much as Liesel tries to adapt to the her new foster-child
life in Himmel street, she keeps having flashbacks and constant nightmares of
her younger brother‘s death with only her papa’s shoulder to cry on. Liesel was
the easiest target to take advantage of in school, and was bullied and abused by teachers. Courtsey of Liesel’s
unhappiness and loneliness she starts reading books and creating her own
identity, known as „The Book Thief“. Book thievery brang joy, relieved her of
stress and was a guilty pleasure of Liesel‘s. Because of words Liesel was lucky enough to be
the only one in Himmel street to survive the bombimg. During the course of her
life, the Book Thief, falls in love with a jewish man, Max Vandenbourg, that was
hidden in her basement. In addition, becomes best friends with a „yellow haired
skinny athlete,“ Rudy, writes her own book that is found by Death and finally „falls
into death’s embrace“ at a very old age in Sydney.
